Songs About Autumn & Fall

japanese_tree_in_autumnIt’s that time of year again. With the kids back in school once again and the days growing shorter and the shadows growing longer. The long hot days are over as the temps are getting milder and evenings getting cooler. Depending upon where you live, we’re finally getting that long awaited rainfall that we haven’t experienced much of since last spring. Breathing that brisk air is exhilarating and refreshing once more. Yes, it’s that time of year again….. Autumn — when the slanting rays of fading summer sun turn the leaves from bright green to harvest gold, barn red, and every color in between… eventually giving way to barren treetops. It’s my favorite time of year to take a long drive through meandering country roads, maybe stop to pick out the perfect pumpkin, sip hot apple cider, and reminisce with old friends. It’s the little things in life that make the journey worth traveling. Little things like a good song and good company. It’s a great time to put together your own mp3 playlist or burn your next seasonal CD with the music of the changing seasons. A lot of these are tranquil and mood reflecting to unwind with while a few others are more hip and invite you to unleash your inner-self. There’s a variety of genres here to choose from to reflect your taste and mood. Enjoy! :)

American Pride & Patriotic Songs

Here is a sampling of some traditional patriotic songs about American Pride ….. the ultimate sounds of patriotism at it’s finest spanning over the past century and then some. Suitable for formal civic gatherings, memorials, dedications, military honors, parades as well as private family functions honoring long time veterans celebrating retirement or recent family members returning home from service to our country in the Middle East or elsewhere overseas. These also can make a nice playlist for your celebrations of Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Labor Day, Flag Day or Patriots Day (honoring those who lost their lives on our darkest day during the tragic attacks of September 11 in New York City).

9/11: Songs of Remembrance & Tribute For Patriot’s Day

These have been recorded by several artists and musicians over the years but I have listed the “best of” renditions whenever possible.

  • America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee)
  • America The Beautiful – Frank Sinatra/Elvis Presley/Ray Charles
  • Anchors Aweigh (US Navy Anthem)
  • Battle Hymn of The Republic – Mitch Miller & His Gang
  • Caissons Go Rolling Along (US Army Anthem)
  • Dixie
  • From The Halls of Montezuma (US Marines Anthem)
  • God Bless America – Kate Smith
  • Star Spangled Banner – Whitney Houston
  • Stars and Strips Forever – John Philips Sousa
  • When Johnny Comes Marching Home
  • Wild Blue Yonder (US Air Force Anthem)
  • Yankee Doodle – James Cagney
  • You’re A Grand Old Flag
  • The Gettysburg Address – recited by Johnny Cash

Below are the words to a very powerful tribute to the USA delivered on Canadian radio back in 1973. I personally have both copies of the original vinyl 45 rpm, one delivered on the air by Gordon Sinclair and a second by Byron MacGregor. Both are collector’s items. They serve as a heartfelt and stirring tribute to the very root as well as the backbone of what America stands for ….. as meaningful today (probably even more so considering what this country has been through since 1973) as it was 26 years ago……….

Here is the You Tube link if you care to watch plus listen to it while reading below.

flag_eagleThe Americans:

A Canadian’s Opinion

by Gordon Sinclair

[originally radio broadcast on June 5, 1973 in Ontario Canada]

The United States dollar took another pounding on German, French, and British exchanges this morning, hitting the lowest point ever known in West Germany. It has declined there by 41% since 1971, and this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous, and possibly the least-appreciated, people in all the earth.

As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtze. Well who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did, that’s who.

They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges, and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Mississippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help. Germany, Japan, and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. And I was there — I saw that. When distant cities are hit by earthquake, it is the United States that hurries into help, Managua, Nicaragua, is one of the most recent examples.

So far this spring, fifty-nine American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped. The Marshall Plan, as well as the Truman Policy all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. And now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, war-mongering Americans.

Now, I’d like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplanes.

Come on now, you, let’s hear it! Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tristar, or the Douglas 10? If so, why don’t they fly them? Why do all international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or a woman on the moon?

You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times, and, safely home again. You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everyone to look at. Even the draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They’re right here on our streets in Toronto. Most of them, unless they’re breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend up here.

When the Americans get out of this bind — as they will — who could blame them if they said “the hell with the rest of the world.” Let somebody else buy the bonds. Let somebody else build or repair foreign dams, or design foreign buildings that won’t shake apart in earthquakes.” When the railways of France, and Germany, and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both of ‘em are still broke.

I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name to me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don’t think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I am one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They’ll come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they’re entitled to thumb their noses at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of these. But there are many smug, self-righteous Canadians.

And finally, the American Red Cross was told at its 48th Annual meeting in New Orleans this morning that it was broke.

This year’s disasters — with the year less than half-over — has taken it all. And nobody, but nobody, has helped.

Drinking Songs – I’ll Drink To That!

Lots of songs come to mind when it comes to indulging a little – or a lot – as the case may be, whether it be at home enjoying good times with friends and family, at a concert, at the lake or beach, or at your favorite tavern or night spot. An ice cold beer at the ballpark on a sweltering hot day, a margarita or daiquiri poolside or whiskey sour or martini at a social event. However you decide to enjoy the libation, music just seems to flow right along with it. Whether your idea of a good time is rock, pop, alternative, punk, country, folk, blues, jazz, soul, reggae, big band, hip hop, or something else, this should almost be a definitive list of music to choose from. It is by no means complete, but a decent compilation of songs that evoke drinking, either in the title or within the lyrics somewhere. With so many to choose from, I decided to leave out the songs that don’t have alcohol or drinking involved. Unfortunately this leaves out a lot of songs you’d probably find and enjoy playing from the jukebox at your favorite bar. Even though a large number of the songs listed are country (drinking seems to be a common subject), I enjoy a wide variety of music myself. Any additional selections are welcome and encouraged. Enjoy

Songs About Trains – All Aboard!

“Listen to the jingle – The rumble and the roar – As she glides along the woodlands – Through the hills and by the shore – Hear the mighty rush of her engine – Hear those lonesome hobo’s call – Traveling through the jungle – On the Wabash Cannonball”….. A classic verse from “Wabash Cannonball”, originally a hit by the legendary Roy Acuff in 1936, covered by countless others over the years.

There is a certain fascination with trains, steel rails and the life of “trainman” … engineer, conductor, gandy dancer, etc. – A free spirit and a hard worker. This compilation of over 300 train songs is by no means complete, but gives an incredible selection of railroad and train related songs covering a huge genre range. You’ll notice a lot of bluegrass and old-time country songs here ranging from 60-80 years back mixed in with some modern day techno, punk, metal, hip hop and Euro-pop. And somewhere in between there is Big Band, jazz, swing, folk, reggae, showtunes, TV series themes, disco, rock, pop and modern country. Some relate to trains indifferent ways from the coal mine workers mixed with travelers and hobos. Several don’t have the word(s) train, locomotive, engines, railcars, boxcars, express, brakeman, rails, spike, etc in the title but have lines within the song suggesting rail travel. Others use the terms such as “Train in Vain” and “Train of Thought” as terms of thinking or action instead of the true sense of the subject matter. Enough said … Enjoy :)

Songs For Dad

Sometimes we get to reflecting and thinking about our childhood years and our days of growing up so long ago (depending upon your age now). Our memories transport us back to our youth and how we interacted with our parents and siblings – the good times, the not-so-good times, the sad times and how we learned to cope with what we had. And for many of us that had a strong and caring father (or father figure) in our lives, we think back on how our lives were shaped into who we are today. The music list below represents songs that can remind us of our dad, some more insightful than others, some with not so perfect situations, but none-the-less, still remind us about him. Whether you called him dad, daddy, father, pops, papa or any other special name, this will serve as a collection of songs to find to download to your mp3 or computer or to burn to disc. This song inventory could also help make an ideal birthday gift to dad, or could serve as a fitting tribute for dad’s memory. Whatever the situation, here it is for you to decide.

PS – A majority of the songs below are also listed in the Father’s Day post awhile back, but have been listed again due to the fact of the Father’s Day Song post being referenced only once or twice a year in early June. This reference is meant to be for year-round use as necessary.

Father’s Day Songs – A Tribute To Dad & Grandpa

Fathers’ Day is a very special day to honor not only our dads , papas and granddads, but those who’ve been a father figure to us over the years. Majority of us have our own fond and special thoughts of dad. For those fortunate enough to still have dad around, treasure and acknowledge him frequently. And for those of us who have lost our dads, the memories linger on and become even stronger as Father’s Day approaches.

My own Dad passed 14 years ago but somehow I know he will hear these heartfelt songs in Heaven and will no doubt be playing some of his own favorite Father’s Day songs from the Big Band era with a huge smile on his face and great pride in his heart.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad ….. I Love You.

Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, dads, stepfathers, grandfathers, Godfathers in the spiritual sense, and big brothers who are like fathers. I love music of all kinds, so I put together a little list of my favorite songs about good ole dad ….. Enjoy :)

Just Added ……….

Father’s Day Facts

The idea of Father’s Day was conceived in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Dodd while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909.

Dodd (now known as “the mother of Father’s Day”) wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm.

The following year, June 19, 1910 was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration, proclaimed by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of William Smart’s birth.

Decades later, the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

Father’s Day By The Numbers

This is a big day for the 66.3 million fathers in America.

Nearly 95 million Father’s Day cards were given last year in the United States, making Father’s Day the fourth-largest card-sending occasion.

Sons and daughters send 50 percent of the Father’s Day card to their dads. Nearly 20 percent of Father’s Day cards are purchased by wives for their husbands. That leaves 30 percent of the cards which go to grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles and “someone special.”

While not everyone in America is a fan of Father’s Day, 72 percent of Americans plan to celebrate or acknowledge Father’s Day.

Gifts For Dad On Father’s Day

Neckties are an old standby and lead the list of Father’s Day gifts. A good place to buy dad a tie or a shirt might be one of 9,189 mens clothing stores around the country.

Other items high on the list of Father’s Day gifts include those items you may find in dad’s toolbox such as hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers. You could buy some of these items for dad at one of the nation’s 14,864 hardware stores or 5,795 home centers.

Other traditional gifts for dad such as fishing rods and golf clubs make for a happy Father’s Day for the 22,410 sporting goods stores in America.

More than 68 million Americans participated at a barbeque in the last year — it’s probably safe to assume many of these barbecues took place on Father’s Day.

Mr. Mom

Mr. Mom is becoming a more common sight at parks across America with 147,000 estimated “stay-at-home” dads. These married fathers with children under 15 years old have remained out of the labor force for more than one year primarily so they can care for the family while their wives work outside the home. These fathers cared for 268,000 children under 15.

The dads seem to stay home more with younger children. Preschoolers claim 20 percent of fathers with employed wives who were the primary caregiver for their preschooler. In contrast, only 6 percent of fathers provided the most hours of care for their grade-school-aged child.

Many families split the responsibility of child care. Many Dad’s (32%) with full time jobs regularly worked evening or night shifts and were the primary source of care for their preschoolers during their children’s mother’s working hours.

Seems like these days, with the economy the way it is, just about everyone has money on their mind – or lack there of. Could be ways to keep a head of those bills and payments due each month, or ways to earn a secondary income, or ways to cut the cost of living down, or worries on the ever worsening job market or housing market, the escalating gas prices, keeping up with the depressing stock market, medical & health care costs, trying to keep an active savings on the upside, money set aside to put the kids through college, being able to take that cruise or trip you’ve been wanting to for years, or maybe being able to retire comfortably, the list goes on and on – I’m sure you could add a few more worries to this list but let’s turn this to happy thoughts for a change. I really wasn’t trying to increase your stress levels here so let me switch gears and offer a variety of songs having to do with money, riches, etc. – most of these have cash, money, or rich in the title and others have strong lyrics we remember dealing with the subject. I’m sure some of these you’ll be remembering and playing through your mind from years past. I’ve included classics from the movies, musicals, stage shows as well as radio & television airplay. Others are much more obscure. From the early 1930’s through the late 2000’s covering pop standards, adult contemporary, pop, rock, jazz, soul, country, bluegrass, alternative, new wave, metal, punk, rhythm & blues, and to a lesser degree hip hop and rap. Something for everyone from great grandma down the line to the preteen bubblegum chewer. Check ‘em out and see how many of these you remember or even know. They’re listed in order by the year they came out. By no means is this complete but rather a pretty decent selection of most of the memorable ones. Please feel free to add others that you remember listening to that I may have left out or forgotten about.
