Drinking Songs – I’ll Drink To That!

Lots of songs come to mind when it comes to indulging a little – or a lot – as the case may be, whether it be at home enjoying good times with friends and family, at a concert, at the lake or beach, or at your favorite tavern or night spot. An ice cold beer at the ballpark on a sweltering hot day, a margarita or daiquiri poolside or whiskey sour or martini at a social event. However you decide to enjoy the libation, music just seems to flow right along with it. Whether your idea of a good time is rock, pop, alternative, punk, country, folk, blues, jazz, soul, reggae, big band, hip hop, or something else, this should almost be a definitive list of music to choose from. It is by no means complete, but a decent compilation of songs that evoke drinking, either in the title or within the lyrics somewhere. With so many to choose from, I decided to leave out the songs that don’t have alcohol or drinking involved. Unfortunately this leaves out a lot of songs you’d probably find and enjoy playing from the jukebox at your favorite bar. Even though a large number of the songs listed are country (drinking seems to be a common subject), I enjoy a wide variety of music myself. Any additional selections are welcome and encouraged. A classic verse from “Wabash Cannonball”, originally a hit by the legendary Roy Acuff in 1936, covered by countless others over the years.

There is a certain fascination with trains, steel rails and the life of “trainman” … engineer, conductor, gandy dancer, etc. – A free spirit and a hard worker. This compilation of over 300 train songs is by no means complete, but gives an incredible selection of railroad and train related songs covering a huge genre range. You’ll notice a lot of bluegrass and old-time country songs here ranging from 60-80 years back mixed in with some modern day techno, punk, metal, hip hop and Euro-pop. Father’s Day Songs – A Tribute To Dad & Grandpa

Fathers’ Day is a very special day to honor not only our dads , papas and granddads, but those who’ve been a father figure to us over the years. Majority of us have our own fond and special thoughts of dad. For those fortunate enough to still have dad around, treasure and acknowledge him frequently. And for those of us who have lost our dads, the memories linger on and become even stronger as Father’s Day approaches.

My own Dad passed 14 years ago but somehow I know he will hear these heartfelt songs in Heaven and will no doubt be playing some of his own favorite Father’s Day songs from the Big Band era with a huge smile on his face and great pride in his heart.

Father’s Day Facts

The idea of Father’s Day was conceived in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Dodd while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909.

Dodd (now known as “the mother of Father’s Day”) wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm.

The following year, June 19, 1910 was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration, proclaimed by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of William Smart’s birth.

Decades later, the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

Father’s Day By The Numbers

This is a big day for the 66.3 million fathers in America.

Nearly 95 million Father’s Day cards were given last year in the United States, making Father’s Day the fourth-largest card-sending occasion.

Sons and daughters send 50 percent of the Father’s Day card to their dads. Nearly 20 percent of Father’s Day cards are purchased by wives for their husbands. That leaves 30 percent of the cards which go to grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles and “someone special.”

While not everyone in America is a fan of Father’s Day, 72 percent of Americans plan to celebrate or acknowledge Father’s Day.

Gifts For Dad On Father’s Day

Neckties are an old standby and lead the list of Father’s Day gifts. A good place to buy dad a tie or a shirt might be one of 9,189 mens clothing stores around the country.

Other items high on the list of Father’s Day gifts include those items you may find in dad’s toolbox such as hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers. You could buy some of these items for dad at one of the nation’s 14,864 hardware stores or 5,795 home centers.

Other traditional gifts for dad such as fishing rods and golf clubs make for a happy Father’s Day for the 22,410 sporting goods stores in America.

More than 68 million Americans participated at a barbeque in the last year — it’s probably safe to assume many of these barbecues took place on Father’s Day.

Mr. Mom

Mr. Mom is becoming a more common sight at parks across America with 147,000 estimated “stay-at-home” dads. These married fathers with children under 15 years old have remained out of the labor force for more than one year primarily so they can care for the family while their wives work outside the home. These fathers cared for 268,000 children under 15.

The dads seem to stay home more with younger children. Preschoolers claim 20 percent of fathers with employed wives who were the primary caregiver for their preschooler. In contrast, only 6 percent of fathers provided the most hours of care for their grade-school-aged child.

Many families split the responsibility of child care. Many Dad’s (32%) with full time jobs regularly worked evening or night shifts and were the primary source of care for their preschoolers during their children’s mother’s working hours.

Soft white sands, palm trees, sailboats, cool breezes, a gentle mist, mild waves, blue horizons, island sunsets, a tropical drink… all reminiscent of well deserved paradise adventure, at least in your mind. Songs To Celebrate America's Independence Day

Independence Day ….. better known today as “The Fourth of July” has different meanings and thoughts for different individuals, and it can vary by age, location, demographics and how you were brought up. For many today, in means backyard BBQ get-togethers, pool parties, block parties, sporting events, beach parties, dancing – for others it’s a family visit to a cemetery or memorial event – and still others it’s watching or participating in a parade, street fair, out in the boat on a lake, river rafting, at a carnival, maybe a concert – All followed by the grand extravaganza, fireworks after dusk or dark. Songs About Money & Riches

Seems like these days, with the economy the way it is, just about everyone has money on their mind – or lack there of. Could be ways to keep a head of those bills and payments due each month, or ways to earn a secondary income, or ways to cut the cost of living down, or worries on the ever worsening job market or housing market, the escalating gas prices, keeping up with the depressing stock market, medical & health care costs, trying to keep an active savings on the upside, money set aside to put the kids through college, being able to take that cruise or trip you’ve been wanting to for years, or maybe being able to retire comfortably, the list goes on and on – I’m sure you could add a few more worries to this list but let’s turn this to happy thoughts for a change. I really wasn’t trying to increase your stress levels here so let me switch gears and offer a variety of songs having to do with money, riches, etc. – most of these have cash, money, or rich in the title and others have strong lyrics we remember dealing with the subject. With this is mind, I thought now may be an appropriate time to put together a good selection of songs with the word “sun” or any derivative of the word with the exception of sunday which is covered in another list on this page. Words such as sunny, sunshine, sunrise, sunset, sundown are included here. There are tons of other songs out there with sun or sunshine in the lyrics but that would send this list into orbit. There are also several other songs about summer and summertime that evoke messages about sunshine but those are listed on another post in this section. A wide range of music is covered over about a hundred year span ranging from big band to heavy metal, early country to modern alternative, pop standards to hip hop.
